The Empress’s Pursuer
PART I: THE THIRD IRONCLAD RULE
An Empress does not simply vanish from The Housekeeping Hotel, without consequences. Her absence was a direct act of war—a rupture of our third and most unforgiving law: sanctuary must never be broken.
And yet, forty-eight hours after she crossed our threshold, Suite Seven was empty.
The disaster had begun on a Tuesday afternoon, when, at precisely twenty-two minutes past two, the grandfather clock in the foyer began to toll—not twice, but an impossible twenty-two measured strikes. It brought my pen to a sudden halt. With the final chime, the air plummeted ten degrees.
I adjusted the knot of my necktie, smoothed my lapels, and kept my eyes fixed upon the double cedar entrance doors. Whenever the corridors smell of deep subterranean clay, it means a resident of considerable antiquity has arrived with a debt they have spent several lifetimes outrunning.
PART II: THE ARRIVAL OF THE EMPRESS
The front latch lifted without a sound, admitting Empress Charlotte—though in the Rosewater Teahouse, she answers only to Lottie. She was not unexpected. Her four traveling trunks of pigskin and iron banding had already been carted up by the luggage lift an hour prior, leaving her to cross our threshold clutching only a beaded evening purse and the braided lead of her plump beagle, Barnaby.
She wore a seventeenth-century imperial gold cloak and a silk dress the color of dried pomegranate skin. The cloak trailed hem-frost across the Turkish carpet while the little hound uncharacteristically whimpered low in his throat, pressing shivering ribs against her silk petticoats.
"Sidney, darling," she whispered, lips drawn bloodless as she leaned across the mahogany counter. "Bolt the garden gate and tell the night clerk to lay ash across the thresholds." She straightened, her fingers trembling against the polished timber as she muttered under her breath, almost to the ether itself: "He has tracked my scent through three dynasties."
